Believe it or not, tanning is our body’s natural way of shielding itself from the sun’s harmful U.V. rays. Exposing your skin to ultraviolet rays or artificial U.V. radiation for long durations, which causes your skin to darken (tan).
Failing to protect your skin from these aggressors can cause long-lasting damage to your skin’s tissue. Therefore, daily skin care is more important than you know to save your skin from any harm or damage.
What is Melanin?
Our cells produce a pigment called melanin, also known as our skin’s natural pigment. Melanin absorbs the ultraviolet radiation and protects itself against causing damage to your skin’s tissue. Tyrosinase is the enzyme responsible for darkening our skin tone.
Mechanism Behind Tan
Tanning is generally triggered by your skin being exposed to sunlight, or, any artificial ultraviolet radiation. Moderate exposure to UVA & UVB rays contributes heavily to the production of melanin in our body.
There are 2 mechanisms involved in the making of a tan by UVA exposure and one due to UVB exposure.
UVA Exposure Tan
UVA radiation penetrates the hidden layers of our skin (dermis), resulting in damaging our skin cells known as keratinocytes (our basal layer of the epidermis), which is where skin cancer mostly develops.
UVA-induced tans are considered to be more harmful than a UVB tan exposure, as it initiates the development of cancer in the skin, and damages our skin’s cellular structure.
UVB Exposure Tan
UVB exposure tan contributes to the damage seen on the epidermis (outermost layer of your skin). It causes skin redness and sunburn which adds to the development of a tan and photoaging in the skin.
