  5. What Are Parabens? Why Do You Need To Avoid Using Them?

Parabens. You probably heard about this term. This is that one ingredient that most people run away from. This term has become one of the common items on a checklist to NOT buy whens hopping for skincare products. What’s the big deal about Parabens?  This blog will help you find just that!

What Are Parabens?

Parabens are esters of parahydroxybenzoic acid used as preservatives in makeup, skincare, haircare, pharmaceuticals and other domestic goods. According to several scientific observations, Parabens are known for their carcinogenic agents or cancer-causing agents.

What Do Parabens Do?

  • Parabens are endocrine disruptors that affect hormonal balance
  • While many beauty giants claim that parabens as beauty products enhance the skin, research has found that parabens accelerate the ageing process.
  • Parabens are considered to be carcinogenic, can turn healthy skin cells to cancer cells

Here’s something you need to know about Parabens:

Parabens Do Not Cause Cancer: Several studies over the years establish that while Parabens themselves do not cause cancer, they have been found in breast cancer cells. Repetitive presence of these chemical compounds in several cases lead to the belief that Parabens accelerate the risk of skin cancer.

Parabens Accelerate Ageing: Parabens are preservative components, which are used to slow-down the microorganism  build-up in products. Meaning: The microbial activity (multiplication of micro-bacteria) in products is slowed down, which can lead to an increased shelf-life. While that is a good thing for your products, the case may not be the same for your skin.

Parabens Are Sensitive To Sunlight: Parabens are sensitive to sunlight. This means that if you use a cream that has parabens in it and you go out in the sun, Parabens start to react to the sun exposure. When this happens, they start to accelerate the ageing process of your skin and even cause skin cancer because parabens react to sunlight. Since parabens are acid compounds, they cause skin damage when under the sun. In short words, sunlight and parabens do not do well together. Especially, on your skin.

The Most Common Compounds Of Parabens:

Methylparaben (E number E218), ethylparaben (E214), propylparaben (E216), butylparaben and heptylparaben (E209). Less common parabens include isobutylparaben, isopropylparaben, benzylparaben. If you see these ingredients in any of your cosmetic products’  labels, you now know what to do.

So, next time you shop for skincare or healthcare products, steer away from products that use parabens and its distant cousins (like really).
